How are children divided into groups?

Children are divided into groups by their age and skill. Please check the camp page for more information.

Does my child need to know how to sail to participate?

No. We have beginner programs at every age in which no sailing experience is required!

Does my child need to know how to swim to participate?

No. Your child does not need to know how to swim to participate but we do require a level of comfort in the water with a lifejacket on. To ensure this we will provide a swim check on the first day of the program. In the swim check each child will be asked to swim in deep water (where they can not touch) with the lifejacket on for their instructor to see their comfort.

Can I sign my child up for more than one camp?

Yes. In fact many children take more than one class. It is possible to have never sailed in the beginning of the summer and end the summer in our advanced program.

What is your student to staff ratio?

Our max student to staff ratio is 10:1.

Are your staff certified?

Yes. All of our staff members are CPR, First Aid and Safe Sport certified. They are all also a minimum of US Level 1 Sailing Instructors.

What is your lifejacket (PFD) policy?

All campers will be required to wear a lifejacket (PFD) anytime they are near the water. This includes when they are swimming or sailing or any other water activity. Lifejackets (PFDs) will be provided by the Chesapeake Experience.

What does my child need to bring?

We encourage all participants bring the following items

  • A lunch (no refrigeration will be provided)

  • Waterbottle (reusable is encouraged)

  • A bag for all your gear

  • A towel

  • Sunscreen

  • Sunglasses

  • A hat

  • Closed toe water shoes (or closed toe shoes that can get wet)

  • A change of clothes for the ride home

Can I come and watch?

We suggest that families come to watch during our specified graduation times (the afternoon last Friday of each session). If families come during camp it can be disruptive to the learning experience. During the graduation one of our founders will be onshore explaining what you are seeing your child do on the water. You will get to see how you child comes in and deriggs their boat. It is a great time for pictures so don't forget your cameras! More information will come via email once the date gets closer.

What is your Covid policies?

During the current status of the pandemic we will require all students and staff to wear masks (or buffs) on land. As per industry standard we ask that the students take the masks off anytime they are in the water as the mask makes it difficult to breathe when wet. This maybe updated as we come closer to the summer as the global pandemic is ever changing.

If your child or any staff member is sick we ask that they stay home.

Do you offer discounts?

Yes we are offering scholarships. Please reach out to nicole@chesx.org for more information.

What happens if you can't host camp for a day?

We are always reluctant to cancel camp but in the event that we are forced to, you will be notified via text and email prior to 7:00 am that day.

What is the cancelation policy?

If you have to cancel your reservation for a camp prior to 90 days before the session, any tuition paid can be applied to future programs or may be refunded, less processing fees. Within 90 days of the start of a session, please contact Rob Deane at rob@chesx.org and we will make every effort to fill that spot and give a full refund less processing fees.

Are there adult classes?

Yes we will be having adult programs this summer as well. Stay tuned by following us on Facebook!

Please feel free to reach out to rob@chesx.org with any questions or concerns! We look forward to helping sailors get on the water in the summer of 2021!
